News from the management
Welcome back!! - The new semester is off to a good start with physical attendance from all students. During exams we were challenged by corona it is therefore nice to see so many students and employees back at campus and without face masks. However, even though it is liberating that we do no longer have restrictions, we strongly recommend keeping a good distance from others and continue maintaining COVID appropriate behavior washing hands and disinfect frequently. And not least, stay home or get tested if you have symptoms. Many people are infected at the moment, and although the vast majority suffers only mild symptoms, ensuring infection prevention is still important.
New research groups
We have now agreed on the names of our research areas and research area leaders. We ended up with 10 strong research areas that represent the Department's competencies and at the same time align very well with the Faculty's sustainability areas and the university's Knowledge for the World strategy which focuses on being a mission-oriented university. Ahead of us is an important task to further develop the research areas. Among other things, we need to establish a research committee, allocate PhD students, research assistants, assistant professors, postdocs and laboratory technicians to the respective research areas, and we must find a constructive way to administer the slightly greater responsibility that will lie in the research areas in the future. This work will take place during Spring.
The 10 new research areas including Professors, Associate Professors and research area leaders (L) look like this:

Grants
As something new, we would like to present the research grants that we have received. We will start with an overview of all externally funded research projects, which was registered in 2021. Ideas on how we present this data are very welcome.
News - studies
As mentioned earlier all first-year students in Aalborg will be part of the Department from summer 2022. From September 2023 the ground floor at Fredrik Bajers Vej 5 will be hosting all our first-years students and our students at 3rd and 4th semester. As part of the relocation plans it has also been decided that we will expand our study team with a new colleague. In August 2022 Rita Kirstine Svendsen will be part of our study team at Fredrik Bajers Vej 7H. Rita is now in charge of the coordination of our 2nd semester students – that way she will get an insight into our studies and teachers and at the same time she will be closely linked to our study team who will be her colleagues from August 2022. Rita has extensive experience in study administration and from AAU in general, and we all look forward to our future collaboration.
An overview of the new semester coordinators in Aalborg and Esbjerg can be found on the website including an overview of theirs tasks. Furthermore, the study board is planning an information meeting for all semester coordinators before each semester. We believe, that we have put together a good team, representing both sections in all semesters at BSc level in Aalborg and that we have found an appropriate and rational way to coordinate the semesters that have the highest number of students.
The new curricula for all the master's programs in Aalborg, which we started working on in 2018, were all approved by the faculty shortly before Christmas. Please be aware that the new courses and projects will be put into effect from Autumn 2022. The new curricula will be available here when they have been approved from "Studieservice".
As part of AAU's contribution to closing down or relocating educational study programmes from the major university cities AAU has proposed that we no longer admit new students to the master's program in Environmental Science (Cand. tech.) from 2023. We do not know the final plan yet, but we will maintain the BSc program in Environmental Science, and all students who are admitted to the master's program will be offered the opportunity to finish their Master’s degree. We have communicated this to all relevant students and explained this both in writing and oral form at the commencement of study. On the positive side, we will in collaboration with BUILD, start developing a specialization in Environmental Science (Cand. polyt.) within the framework of the master's program in water and environment. The faculty will start the process when the overall plan for the relocation process has been approved by the Ministry of Education which is expected to take place in the early Spring. We should off course be part of this process and we expect the curriculum to be finished by Autumn. During this work we will probably have to revise the BSc program in Environmental Science. We hope both sections will get involved in the process and that way bring the Department's professional expertise in the environmental field into play in the best possible way.
Unfortunately, we have to minimize the student intake on the Master's program in Chemical Engineering - the first 2 years the maximum number of students may not exceed 15 students and following the number is reduced to a maximum of 11 students. It is very unfortunate, not least as this initiative takes place at the same time as the universities are relocating study places. Furthermore, it fits very poorly with the city of Esbjerg's ambitions to become Denmark's energy metropolis. However, this is the result of the increasing number of unemployment among graduates studying Chemical Engineering during the last 10 years compared to the number of unemployments in other engineering programs. Because the growing number of unemployments of graduates from our Department is a problem in general this also has a negative effect on our development potential. We have a strong focus on employability and job readiness among our students, and will continue to do so in the years to come.
New Associate Professor in Biology - Simone Langhans
Please welcome Associate Professor Simone Langhals. Simone is an interdisciplinary freshwater ecologist with 15+ years of experience in aquatic ecology, ecosystem restoration, decision analysis theory, spatial conservation planning, ecosystem services modelling, stakeholder engagement and knowledge co-production. In her research she combines these topics to – often in multi-disciplinary teams and with local governments and communities – investigate alternative ways of solving complex environmental decision problems with a focus on sustainable freshwater management.
Simone grew up in Switzerland, where she received a PhD in freshwater ecology from ETH Zürich. After her PhD she led a Swiss-wide project dedicated to set quality targets and develop monitoring protocols for Swiss rivers, bringing together representatives of each regional water authority. This position introduced her to the societal challenges around solving complex decisions in freshwater restoration, conservation and management, which since then builds the backbone of her research. Simone has received funding from various sources to lead research projects in Switzerland, Australia, Germany, New Zealand, and Spain, where she also lectured at universities, organised seminars and facilitated stakeholder workshops.

Summer seminar 25-26 August 2022 - please save the date
The date for the summer seminar 2022 is now scheduled for the 25th-26th August and hopefully everyone will participate. Therefore, we would like to ask you to please save the dates in your calendar. The seminar takes place at Fuglsøcentret in Knebel and as usual the program will include both academic and social activities. We are crossing our fingers that the corona situation is still under control in August and that we can continue the tradition. Further information will follow in the near future.

Meeting schedule for the Department committees
Being involved in the governing bodies at Aalborg University is one way to increase your influence and support the positive development of the university. We would like to encourage everybody to participate in this process. Therefore, in the future, an updated meeting schedule for each Department committee will be included in the newsletter, so that you know in good time when the meetings are scheduled. Please note that the agenda is prepared well in advance of the meetings, which is why any subject for the agenda should be submitted to the committee's representatives no later than one month before the date of the meeting. You will find the representatives of the committees here.
