NEWS FROM THE DESK OF THE HEAD OF DEPARTMENT

As you read this, you either have a well-deserved Easter holiday ahead of you or behind you. I hope that you have used this opportunity to wind down from a busy winter period and recharge your batteries for the spring season. Meanwhile, I would like to share some insight into what has crossed my desk in the previous months.Firstly, at the management level, we have been busy working on the reorganization of the department (see below) and updating our pre-award project management tools (e.g., budget templates and related materials). Additionally, I have conducted Staff Performance and Development Reviews (MUS) with several of our professors, associate professors, and assistant professors. This has provided me with a great opportunity to learn more about the challenges and ambitions of the department, and I look forward to continuing discussions in the coming months. Staff Performance and Development Reviews (MUS) for other personnel groups will be initiated later this year.

GOODBYE TO THE DEAN

The dean of our faculty, Mogens Rysholt Poulsen, has quite abruptly resigned from his position, ENGINEERING Dean Resigns - Aalborg University (aau.dk), and as of April 1´st, Thomas Bak, dean of the Technical Faculty of IT and Design will step in as interim dean for the Faculty of Engineering and Science. On top of this both our vice deans, John K. Pedersen and Olav Geil, are acting interim head of departments at Department of the Build Environment and Department of Mathematical Sciences, respectively. The hiring processes for a new dean, as well as new heads of departments are in progress. It is expected that it will take at least 6 months before the new faculty management is in place and on its way back to normal. Nevertheless, the turbulence at the faculty management level should, to the best of my judgement, have little to no effect on daily business at our department.

NEW BUDGET GOAL FOR 2024

A new budget goal for 2024 has been agreed with the faculty. The new goal is +2 mio. kr., meaning that we are expected to make a surplus of 2 mio. kr. as opposed to the zero-goal expected at the beginning of the year. This new goal is partly based on a payback of the faculty deficit from 2023 and increase in salaries (increasing by 5.9% by April 1´st, whereas only 3% salary increase had been anticipated). We expect to be able to reach the new budget goal through minor budget adjustments and an increase in buyouts of department financed staff.

SEXISM AT DANISH UNIVERSITIES

Recently, VIVE (The Danish Centre for Social Science Research), have published a report on Sexism and its effect on careers at Danish universities. You can find the report in Danish here. The report shows that experiences of sexism are widespread among Ph.D. students, particularly women. At AAU, the following percentages apply:

  • 36% of female Ph.D. students have encountered demeaning behavior, compared to 17% of male Ph.D. students.
  • 28% of female Ph.D. students have experienced sexualized demeaning behavior, while only 13% of male Ph.D. students have.
  • 19% of female Ph.D. students have faced unwanted sexual contact and harassment, whereas this figure is 5% for male Ph.D. Students.

These numbers do not necessarily apply directly to our department, but sexism as for any form of harassment is by all means unacceptable, as it influences the mental health of those affected and the choice of career paths.

I would like again to stress that we have a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of harassment and sexism. In the case you experience any form of harassment, it is your duty to address the problem to your nearest leader, your union representative, a member of the Occupational Health and Safety Commitee or a member of the management (Jens Muff, Cejna Anna Quist Jensen, Niels Thomas Eriksen, Morten Korsgaard or me).

WELLCOME TO THE NEW SECTIONS

As presented in December, the management has decided to implement changes to the organizational structure of the department. The primary change to the organizational structure involves transitioning from having both sections and research areas to only having research areas which, going forward, will be upgraded to sections. In effect, we have removed one layer from the leadership structure of the department. We have now reached a point where we have finalized our work with the reorganization and where the new sections are in place. The major changes going from research areas to sections are that the research areas Separation Processes and Sustainable Bioresource Technology have merged into Section of Bioresources and Process Engineering, Jeppe Lund Nielsen have joined the Section of Functional Ecology and Evolution and Trine Rolighed Thomsen have joined Section of Medical Biotechnology.  Most research area leaders continue as section heads, with the exceptions that Jens Muff and Niels Madsen takes over the responsibility for Section of Chemical Engineering and Section of Environmental Biomonitoring, respectively. Thanks to Rudi Nielsen and Jeppe Lund Nielsen for the work they have done as research area leaders for the Chemical Engineering and Environmental Biomonitoring research areas, respectively.

The new department structure will be in effect from April 1´st. The names of the new sections, as well as the newly appointed sections heads, can be seen below.

  • Section of Microbial and Plant Biotechnology / Jens Laurids Sørensen
  • Section of Applied Supramolecular Chemistry / Casper Steinmann
  • Section of Medical Biotechnology / Anders Olsen
  • Section of Disordered Materials / Morten Mattrup Smedskjær
  • Section of Functional Ecology and Evolution / Majken Pagter
  • Section of Chemical Engineering / Jens Muff
  • Section of Bioresources and Proces Engineering / Mette Lubeck
  • Section of Environmental Microbiology / Per Halkjær Nielsen
  • Section of Environmental Biomonitoring / Niels Madsen

I´m excited about the new setup for the department management and look forward to work with the new section heads on developing the sections and the department as a whole.

WHO'S WHO: COLLEAGUE SPOTLIGHT

In every newsletter, we try to create greater awareness between positions and individuals by asking a few questions so that we can all get to know the colleague better.

We have asked Sergey Kucheryavskiy a few questions, to get to know him better.

When did you start at the department, and what is your background?

I earned my PhD in physics and mathematics in 2001. The PhD project focused on using fractal geometry to describe deformation structures in porous metals and pseudo alloys, a topic quite different from my current work. I spent a significant amount of time in the materials lab, "baking" materials in a special oven, deforming them, cutting, polishing surfaces, taking microscopic images, and so on. After defending the thesis, I took a break and wasn't active as a researcher for a couple of years. In 2003, I decided to change my research interests to Chemometrics. I met several inspiring individuals, including AAU professor Kim Esbensen, who motivated me in this endeavor. We started working together on small problems related to texture analysis and mapping geometrical properties of textures with physical and chemical properties of the depicted materials. In 2004, I visited him in Esbjerg as a guest researcher, marking my first time in Denmark. In 2007, he opened a researcher position at campus Esbjerg, I applied, and fortunately, I was accepted. On the 28th of September 2007, my wife and I landed in Kastrup with two large 30 kg suitcases. That's how it all started.

Why did you choose the path you did regarding your education?

Well, my path is not directly related to my education but is coherent. I graduated from the Department of Physics and Electronics. When I started my education at the university, I initially wanted to work with electronics and computers. After a couple of years, I realized that I mostly enjoy using computers to solve problems—implementing numerical algorithms, analyzing images, etc. My master's diploma was devoted to the analysis of satellite images using wavelets. Then, during my PhD, I analyzed microscopic images of materials. Then textures. Then spectral images. Currently, I work extensively on analyzing different kinds of spectroscopic data and inventing new methods to make this analysis more efficient. I also like getting my hands on new types of data, learning about the nature of the data, different peculiarities, and so on. So there is always something new.

What does your role at BIO entail?

I see my role as twofold. First is to educate students so they understand how to design, carry out, and analyze their experiments to obtain meaningful and reproducible results and how to make a good story out of the results. How to extract useful information from experimental data and how to interpret it. This is not always easy, as many of our students do not like math, do not understand it properly, and sometimes even are afraid of it. My role is to make these topics clear and understandable for everyone despite these obstacles. As a researcher, I help my colleagues do more or less the same—plan sampling, design experiments, collect and clean experimental data, and extract useful and meaningful information from the collected data. I do it both by participating in various projects as a data scientist and by developing new methods and tools that make part of this job more efficient.

Is there a fun fact about you that would surprise your colleagues at the department?

When I was about to turn 45 three years ago, my friends and relatives asked me what I wanted as a birthday present. I asked them to buy me an electric piano, to their huge surprise. By that time, I knew very little about music theory, did not know notes, could not play anything except a couple of simple chords on a guitar, which I learned during my student years. But I always wanted to learn playing the piano and decided that if I do not start at 45, I will never do it. So, I got the instrument, downloaded a learning app to a tablet, and started. Since then, I practice 30-60 minutes almost every day. The progress is extremely slow, learning a piece sometimes takes months, but it is a very enjoyable activity anyway.

AAU STAFF WELL-BEING BAROMETER

In case you haven't already read this, the results of the well-being survey conducted in the fall of 2023 are now available and have been published online as a general summary at trivselsbarometer.aau.dk. At the department, we have received separate reports aggregated to the research area level for all units with 10 or more respondents – which you can view here.
