News from management

Energy-efficient initiatives

We are in the midst of the worst energy crisis since the 1970s, and to avoid a lack of energy in the cold months, the government is now introducing a number of initiatives. Locally it means, that it will be colder to attend AAU this winter. With the government's new energy saving plan, the temperature in AAU's buildings must be lowered to 19 degrees. In addition, all external lighting must be switched off and other possible savings on power consumption are on the way. In addition to turning down the heat, AAU and the other universities have been ordered to switch off all unnecessary lighting in all buildings and outdoor lighting of facades, park areas etc.

In the coming time, there will be more ideas and initiatives to save energy at AAU in general. This can, for example, be switching off lights, screens or other equipment when not in use, and sharing energy-consuming facilities such as fridges, freezers and the like, where possible. In our department we want to support these initiatives, and I therefore encourage alle employees to contact me or others in the management with ideas, suggestions or new initiatives. As an example, we will turn up the temperature up for our minus 80 degree freezers to minus 70 degrees.

Finally, I would like to thank you all for your existing efforts and hard work across the Department. Let us continue to behave responsibly and minimize the use of unnecessary energy consumption. Why not take the stairs instead of the elevator? Please spread the word if you have good ideas on how to save energy and keep warm in the coming months!

/Michael

Welcome to Stefan Junne and Xinxin Xiao

A warm welcome to our new tenure track assistant professor Xinxin Xiao, who joins Section of Chemical Science and Engineering starting from 1 October with workplace in Aalborg. Xinxin’s research interests are mainly in bio-electrochemistry-oriented topics such as electrocatalysis, biocatalysts, healthy nanotechnology, energy harvesting and storage. Xinxin comes from a position as Researcher at DTU Chemistry.

Another warm welcome to our new associate professor Stefan Junne, who joins Section of Bioscience and Engineering also starting 1. October with workplace in Esbjerg. Stefan’s main research activities include Scale up and scale-down of microbial processes, single-use bioreactor technology for microbial and plant cell cultivation, and application of process analytical technologies with a special focus on the application of single-cell monitoring for the real-time monitoring of individual responses and more. Stefan comes from a position as group leader at Department of Biotechnology, TU Berlin.

New Portrait photos

As part of the digital transition with our new website bio.aau.dk / en.bio.aau.dk and an increasing focus on digital presence and appearance, it has been decided that all permanent staff should have new professional portrait photos taken. Accordingly, you have received an invitation per e-mail with more accurate information. The photographer will come to Aalborg 24 October, 3 November, and a few hours on 9 November. The photographer will come to Esbjerg on 31 OCtober 2022.

Save the date - Christmas party

Section of Chemical Science and Engineering is working hard to organize this year's Department Christmas party. It will be on Friday 2 December 2022. More information will follow.

Graphic design at bio

At the administration we have a student assistant, Frida Elmstrøm Therkelsen, employed primarily to assist researchers with graphic design and visual communication. Frida's primary task is in collaboration with researchers at the department, to support publications, research applications and presentations with graphic illustrations and visual communication. Please reach out to Frida at fridaelth@bio.aau.dk and cc Line (lch@bio.aau.dk) or Niels (nks@bio.aau.dk), if you need graphic assistance.

Charging electric scooters and bicycles on campus

Campus Service has announced that it is not permitted for students or employees to charge electric scooters and bicycles on campus. Nor is it permitted to store the above mentioned indoors. Indoor storage may result in them being removed from the building. Read more here

Edible Insects for a sustainable future

The creeps were crawling at the Department of Chemistry and Bioscience Tuesday 20 September, when we had a room full of research and business guests visiting for 'Edible Insects for a Sustainable Future'.

Around 70 guests were invited to a thematic day focused on research and the use of insects for food and feed. Despite the great media attention and the public interest that insects as feed and food is receiving, it is important that we continue to develop this relative new research area and industry. The aim of the thematic day was to bring together stakeholders across traditional disciplines and interests for a constructive dialogue on status and future efforts in the field, with a special focus on research and industry developments. The program consisted of both internal and external presenters including international researchers as Arnold van Huis and Jeffery Tomberlin.

Inaugural lecture by Sir Gregory Winter

Tuesday 27 September the auditorium was packed for the inaugural lecture from our new Honorary Doctor – The Nobel Prize Winning Sir Gregory Winter from Cambridge University. In 2018 Winter was awarded The Nobel Prize in Chemistry. As a young researcher he specialized in protein and nucleic acid sequencing. He pioneered the science of protein engineering, focusing first on enzymes and then antibodies. He invented techniques to humanize rodent antibodies for use as therapeutics, and later to make fully human antibodies using combinatorial gene repertoires. Sir Gregory Winter is a Fellow of The Royal Society and was knighted in 2004 for his services to science. A truly remarkable lecture was given to around 170 researchers, students, staff, and other guests at campus! Have a peak of the day in this short video

ERC PROJECT LAUNCH: NEW HORIZONS IN GLASS STRUCTURE AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES

Stronger glass and production processes with improved sustainability were on the agenda this Monday 10 October. Every year, the EU awards the 'ERC Consolidator Grant' to a number of excellent researchers who are in the middle of their academic career - and this year Morten Mattrup Smedskjaer received an ERC Grant of 2 Mio Euro. Monday 10 October, we celebrated the project launch and had topics as 'New Horizons in Glass Structure and Mechanical Properties', 'Accelerating Glass Discovery by Machine Learning' and 'Looking at glass through a new mathematical lens' discussed by Morten Mattrup Smedskjaer, Lisbeth Fajstrup and Mathieu Bauchy. We look forward to following Morten and the team's future results.

Inaugural Lecture by Distinguished Professor Mark van Loosdrecht and launch of the REThiNk-project

31 October the Center of Microbial Communities invites everyone to this inaugural lecture plus a celebration of the start of our new project REThiNk - Recovery of extracellular polymers from wastewater treatment residuals as a new circular biopolymer.
Professor Mark van Loosdrecht is a world leader in environmental biotechnology and his research has significantly contributed to the understanding of how microorganisms can be used for recovery of resources and transformation of waste into valuable compounds for the benefit of humans and the environment.

Join the Sustainable Energy Workshop

The Faculty of Engineering and Science invites researchers across areas to collaborate and foster new ideas at a workshop on sustainable energy. Researchers from every department with an interest in energy production and distribution, renewable energy technologies and materials, efficient storage, cross sector integration and management, flexible and efficient energy use and data-driven forecast and control systems are invited. The goal is to get new inspiration, discuss and develop ideas for new projects with fellow researchers from other parts of Engineering and receive early-stage support to your projects or ideas. The workshop takes place on December 2nd at 10 to 14 in Aalborg. Get answers and details from Simona Padurariu, Funding Process Consultant.

Meeting schedule for the Department committees

Being involved in the governing bodies at Aalborg University is one way to increase your influence and support the positive development of the university. We would like to encourage everybody to participate in this process. Therefore, in the future, an updated meeting schedule for each Department committee will be included in the newsletter, so that you know in good time when the meetings are scheduled. Please note that the agenda is prepared well in advance of the meetings, which is why any subject for the agenda should be submitted to the committee's representatives no later than one month before the date of the meeting. You will find the representatives of the committees here.
