NEWS FROM THE DESK OF THE HEAD OF DEPARTMENT
As the spring semester draws to a close, I wanted to inform you on some of the resent changes in our organization as well as the status for some of the changes we will have to get used to in the coming months and years.
Changes in department sections
After careful consideration, the Section of Microbial and Plant Biotechnology has decided to split up and merge with other sections. This decision has solely been taken in consideration on how to best integrate the section members in the new department structure and the well-established collaboration among the section members will continue unaffected. This has off cause lead to a few changes in our organization. First, the number of sections decreases from 9 to 8 sections. Teis Esben Søndergaard and his team will merge with the Section of Medical Biotechnology, Kåre Lehmann Nielsen and his team will merge with Section of Functional Ecology and Evolution. This section will change name to reflect the change in personnel, where Section of Functional Ecology and Genomics is the current working title. Stefan Junne, Jens Laurids Sørensen and their teams will merge with the Section of Chemical Engineering and the name of the new section will be Section of Chemical and Bioengineering. Section head for this new section will be Jens Laurids Sørensen. Jens Muff will continue as Leader of BIO Esbjerg. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Jens Muff for the 9 years he has served as Head of Section in different setups and look forward to his continued contribution to the administration of our activities at Campus Esbjerg and at the department as member of the daily management of the department.
An updated list of sections and section heads is provided below:
- Section of Applied Supramolecular Chemistry / Casper Steinmann
- Section of Medical Biotechnology / Anders Olsen
- Section of Disordered Materials / Morten Mattrup Smedskjær
- Section of Functional Ecology and Genomics / Majken Pagter
- Section of Chemical and Bioengineering / Jens Laurids Sørensen
- Section of Bioresources and Proces Engineering / Mette Lubeck
- Section of Environmental Microbiology / Per Halkjær Nielsen
- Section of Environmental Biomonitoring / Niels Madsen
Moving into unknown sections
As most of you are aware we will be facing a number of changes in the near future that may reflect our work life considerable. 1) Mandatory registration of working hours will be implemented Juli 1´st this year. Our central management is still working on the details (see here). 2) New management is currently being hired throughout our organization. Department of Mathematical Sciences should soon be able to announce their new head of department and the process of hiring a new department head for the Department of the Build Environment is ongoing. Additionally, the process of hiring the new dean for the Faculty of Engineering and Science has begun with me as member of the hiring committee. 3) Negotiations for the reform of the university educations in Denmark (kandidatreform) is ongoing. As all negotiations essentially are conducted behind closed doors, no detailed information on the outcome of these is available. The only leaked information related to the expected reduction in number of students for each university. Here AAU is projected to reduce the number of by 440 students (approx. 12 %). This may sound bad but considering that this reduction is seen in relation to the total AAU uptake in 2019, where we as a whole had a record uptake of students, we end up in a situation where AAU in the coming years can take more students than we did in 2023. Nevertheless, the full consequences of this very wide-ranging change in the educational system at Danish universities on our educations and consequently department is still unknown.
On this note, I hope those of you involved in educations are closing in on finalizing the semester and getting ready for a busy exam period. We will soon be able to celebrate yet another batch of well-educated candidates equipped with valuable skills for tomorrow’s challenges. If anyone needs to step out of the nice sunny weather we are enjoying at the moment (taking the usual Danish summer weather in consideration) I would recommend taking time to watch “Mysteriet om de døde børn”, available on TV2 Play. One of the most prominent examples on how work originating from our department can make real impact.
WHO'S WHO: COLLEAGUE SPOTLIGHT
In every newsletter, we try to create greater awareness between positions and individuals by asking a few questions so that we can all get to know the colleague better
We have asked Christine a few questions, to get to know her better:
I started my position as HR Administrator at the department in December 2023. I came directly from a similar position at the Department of Materials and Production, where I have been employed for the past 16 years.
I completed my office education in Public Administration in 2008 and for the past 2 years, I have been studying the accredited HR Partner education alongside my work at AAU - only lacking the final module.
During the first 8 years of my employment at the Department of Materials and Production, I worked as Project Administrator, but my interest and passion have always been related to HR topics, with focus on the connection between human aspects, culture, working environment and which impact these important areas have on the success of the company. So, in 2016 an opportunity as HR administrator came up at my former workplace and I did not hesitate a second to say yes.
My daily work consists of a with range of HR processes and tasks within recruitment, onboarding, guidance in specific rules within the areas of holiday, sickness, leaves of absence etc.
Privately I am living with my husband and our two girls in Arden near “Rold Skov”. When I am not at work, I love spending time riding through the forest on my MTB and enjoying the beautiful nature from the hills. I often end my MTB rides with a quick dip in “Store Økssø” no matter the season.

NEWS FROM STUDIES
Censor Corps
All university study programs are associated with a censor corps, from which we must recruit external censors. The studies at BIO are associated with 4 different censor corps, and we must choose censors from the right ones. The censor corps appears in §6 of each study program. Please note that the BSc and BEng (diplomingeniør) programs as well as the technical and natural science programs in chemistry are linked to different censor corps. For project exams of students in groups mixed from different programs, the examiner must be associated with just one of the program's censor corps.

NEWS FROM THE ADMINISTRATION
Guidelines for approval of travel
Due to increased focus on business trips, it is necessary to secure further documentation concerning budgeting and travel information. Therefore, new budget forms is available on the Financial Departments webpage.
All employees must secure a written or oral approval from their personnel manager prior to the business trip regardless of the length of the business trip.
If the employee e.g. travels more than 6 days (can include private days) or spend more than DK. 10.000, per unit (e.g. flight or hotel), then the employee must fill out the new budget forms prior to the business trip. During this process one is also obligated to secure a written preapproval first from their personal manager and thereafter a person with the necessary financial authority (Anders Winther Ægidiussen).
Any questions concerning the above, please contact the administration.
A new system for Travel and Expenses will be implemented in June, more information concerning this will follow in the upcoming newsletter. This does not affect the new guidelines for travel settlement above.
