News from the management

Christmas is a time of traditions, but like everything else during the year, December will not be quite as it used to be. Unfortunately, the corona pandemic is not over, which is why we at the Department have decided to postpone the Department's Christmas lunch until Spring, when the situation has hopefully changed for the better. At the same time, we have for a period put bread and fruit on pause. We believe these decisions are right in the current situation and I would like to remind you of the guidelines set out by the authorities and the university and to limit social events in the sections in the weeks leading up to Christmas. When it's spring and we're on the other side of the corona wave we will make up for lost time.

The Executive Board, headed by Rector Per Michael Johansen, recently visited the Department. On that occation we had the opportunity to present our visions for the future, our successes and discuss some of the challenges we experience. Several of our younger researchers gave presentations and had planned guided lab tours at Fredrik Bajers Vej 7H. You all did great and your inspirational talk aroused great enthusiasm and curiosity among the audience. Thank you for your commitment and the exciting presentations!

In November, we also had a visit from the Danish Working Environment Authority, who spent two days at the Department interviewing different employee groups, the working environment committee and the management. In connection to this, I would like to say a big thank you to the employees who took part in the interviews. I am incredibly happy and proud that after the visit, the Danish Working Environment Authority has awarded the Department a green working environment smiley, which shows that we are working systematically to ensure a safe and healthy working environment.  A healthy workplace environment is the resposability of everybody, so a big thank you to everyone for your efforts to ensure a good working environment at the Department.

I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the employees who have won awards and have been recognized for their efforts in recent times. It is fully deserved and a proof that we are doing well both as individuals and as a Department.

Finally, I would like to welcome Casper Donneborg Roed, who has just started in the Department's finance team.

I hope to see you on December 16, 2021 for some online Christmas fun.

/Michael

Workshops focusing on the faculty's nine sustainability areas

The faculty has initiated a series of workshops focusing on the nine sustainability focus areas. The first workshop on ‘Agricultural and Food Technology’ was held at our Department on 16 November. Approx. 50 participants with representatives from all departments from the Faculty of Engineering and Science were present. Read more about the event here (In Danish only)

The workshops are an obvious opportunity to make new contacts and can lead to new collaboration across Departments. Remember that there are good opportunities to seek financial support to facilitate collaboration at the faculty. The next workshop in the series of nine will focus on the topic ‘Recycling and Circular Economy’ and will be held at the Department of Materials and Production on 20 January 10:00 - 15:00.

STRATEGIC FUNDS FROM THE FACULTY

We have been extremely active in seeking strategic funding from the faculty. As a department, we are thus involved in 13 Bubble or excellence initiatives initiated in the autumn of 2021. The opportunity to apply for strategic funding at the faculty will continue until further notice until September 2022, so please considder this opportunity. To be considered for Bubble projects, the project must involve collaboration between at least two departments at the faculty. The projects involve co-financing from the department and the budget must be agreed with Michael Toft Overgaard. If there are questions about the process, they can be directed to Torsten Nygård Kristensen.

NEW PHD AND POSTDOC committee established

Across the two new sections, we have established a committee that focuses on initiatives that can make it even more attractive to be a PhD student or postdoc at the Department. The committee consists of Morten Mattrup Smedskjær, Torsten Nygård Kristensen, PhD student Stine Frey Laursen, PhD student Peter Grouleff Jensen, post doc Helene Halkjær Jensen, and post doc Nikos Montesantos. The idea of the committee is to help initiate a forum to facilitate better knowledge of each other's work and create an even more vibrant social and academic environment.

During the early summer of 2022, we are planning an event for PhD students, Post docs and research assistants - more information will follow.

Latest update from the department committee

Meeting schedule for the Department committees

It is important for both employees and students at AAU to be involved in the governing bodies as this provides an opportunity get influence. Therefore, in the future, an updated meeting schedule for each Department committee will be included in the newsletter, so that you know in good time when the meetings are scheduled. Please note that the agenda is prepared well in advance of the meetings, which is why any subject for the agenda should be submitted to the committee's representatives no later than one month before the date of the meeting. You will find the representatives of the committees here.
