Dear Colleagues at the Department of Chemistry and Bioscience

I'm honored to step into my new role as your Head of Department, and I'd like to take this moment to introduce myself and share my vision for our journey ahead.

As some of you might already know, I have been part of the Aalborg University family since 1994. Over the years, I have navigated through different roles, from Head of Section to Vice Head of Department and constituted head of the department at different periods. I think This long-standing commitment to AAU has endowed me with a rich understanding of our department's dynamics, as well as the broader university framework.

Transparency and Collaboration

As one of the focuses in the coming years, I will work on how we organize our work at the department. Here clear leadership, employee involvement, and transparency will be my guidelines. The goal for me is to ensure that you as employees feel motivated, take ownership of your individual and collective tasks, and have a clear leadership structure to relate to. The overall goal is for me to ensure that the department has maximum impact for the society, while also being an attractive workplace where employees thrive and develop.

Addressing Societal Challenges

Universities are increasingly expected to tackle pressing societal issues—climate change, biodiversity loss, resource scarcity, food security, health, and environmental pollution, to name a few. Our department has consistently risen to these challenges. We broadly deliver on the core tasks of education, research, knowledge dissemination, and talent development, and has never delivered as much in terms of research in width, volume, citations, and impact as we do now.

A Commitment to Education

Our greatest societal impact is achieved through the education graduates with high-quality and relevant programs. For me education must be continuously improved and developed in line with changes within various disciplines and their societal relevance and I look forward to taking a more central strategic role in this work.

Preparing for the Road Ahead

We stand at a time when Danish universities face economic constraints, shifting student demographics, and uncertainties in external funding. I am committed to maintaining a sound financial footing for our department, ensuring we continue to grow—not just in revenue, but in quality, relevance, and value creation.

Before implementing any significant changes, I plan to spend the next 4-5 months doing my homework, familiarizing myself with our operational and financial landscape. This will include discussions with key stakeholders, including many of you, to ensure a well-rounded understanding of our challenges and opportunities.

Availability and Accessibility

You can expect to see me at both campuses, with a minimum of four visits to Esbjerg per year. It is my intention to be visible and available as much as possible. In Aalborg you may be lucky to find me in my old office on level 3. It is one of the few corner offices with windows to two sides, so I´m not willing to exchange it for another office just yet. If you need to reach me by mail, please use head@bio.aau.dk, the head email account which I have inherited from John, who inherited it from Michael.

Acknowledgements

As I transition into this new role, I would like to express my gratitude to Morten Dueholm and Søren Strandskov Sørensen for taking over the first-year semester coordination, Peter Kristensen for agreeing to lead our PhD program, and Casper Steinmann for becoming the Research Area Leader for Applied Supramolecular Chemistry.

I´m excited to get started in this new position, where I look forward to bringing my skills and visions into play as head of our department.

Warm regards, Kim Lambertsen Larsen

DHL RELAY RACE

On 30 August the annual DHL relay race took place in Aalborg, with many teams participating in both running and walking. The competition was fierce, and the atmosphere fantastic both during and after the race. As tradition goes, the university supplied AAU running shirts for the event, along with salads and draft beer after the race.

Results:

  • Fastest male runner: Sebastian Mølvang Dall (time 20:05)
  • Fastest female runner: Sofie Zacho Vestergaard (time 22:48)
  • Fastest running team: Kombardo with Marie Riisgaard Jensen, Sebastian Mølvang Dall, Mads Albertsen, Morten Eneberg Nielsen and Thomas Bygh Nymann Jensen (time 1:51:39)
  • Fastest walking team: Hold 2 with Helle Blendstrup, Susanne Remmer Bielidt, Gitte Øland Møller, Chenjing Jiang and Sofie Albrekt Hansen (time 51:21)

New 2023 financial goal

As shared by the Interim Head of Department, John K. Pedersen, at the Summer Seminar in August, we have been given a new financial goal for 2023 for our internal budget at the department which is due to AAU’s financial situation. Previously the goal had been -25 million DKK, but now the goal has been adjusted to -20 million DKK.

To reach the updated goal, we must save 5 million DKK through various methods, which include:

  • Reducing the general salary increase in 2023 (approximately 1 million DKK)
  • Saving research investments from the Research Committee (1 million DKK)
  • General savings for department seminar (from 2 days to 1 day), personal accounts, etc. (around ½ million DKK)
  • Saved/postponed strategic initiatives, start packages, PhD positions, etc. (around 1.5 million DKK)
  • Utilizing surplus funds from completed projects (around ½ million DKK)
  • Accurate estimation after the budget’s second period follow-up (September)

If you have any questions about this, please contact the Head of Department, Kim Lambertsen Larsen, head@bio.aau.dk

Introducing Our New PhD Programme Leader

Join us in welcoming Professor Peter Kristensen as the new leader of the PhD programme. With a background of supervising and co-supervising over 24 PhD students, Peter brings a lot of experience to the role.
- I am looking forward to being able to follow all the interesting scientific work that is being conducted at the Department, Peter says.

Casper Steinman new leader of Applied Supramolecular Chemistry

As Kim Lambertsen Larsen is now Head of Department of Chemistry and Bioscience Casper Steinmann has assumed the position as research area leader for Applied Supramolecular Chemistry. Casper says:
- Our vision in the research area is to understand chemistry all the way from single molecules to advanced chemical processes. We call it: From Micro to Macro. Basically, we try to bridge the gap between how molecules interact and how they behave, in order to solve the challenges, we face in society, with a special focus on energy production, disease prevention and treatment.

NEWS FROM STUDIES

Using AI in teaching and exams

AAU has prepared a guide for students on the use of artificial intelligence in connection with teaching and project work, Generative AI at AAU. At faculty level, a microcredential on AI is also being prepared. Students are allowed to use artificial intelligence to a certain extent in their work. If they do, for example, in project reports, it must be clearly stated. On the other hand, students are not allowed to use artificial intelligence for the exam, if this is not specifically allowed for the exam in question. This will be highlighted in the department's exam schedules for June 2023 and beyond. It may be a violation of the university's disciplinary rules if students write their report using artificial intelligence without it being clear, or if they use artificial intelligence to answer exam papers. If this is suspected, lecturers must notify the Head of Studies, nte@bio.aau.dk. Questions from students about the use of artificial intelligence may also be referred to the Head of Studies to ensure uniform information for all students.

Study Start

Today, we are welcoming around 210 new bachelor students to the Department of Chemistry and Bioscience in Aalborg and Esbjerg, and it's wonderful to see a lot of activity in the hallways once again. An excellent program has been arranged at both campuses, so we hope that the new students will settle in well and get their studies started successfully. You can monitor the enrolment progress using the internal key figures provided here

Reform of the Danish Educational Programmes for Future Master Students

At the end of June, the SVM government, together with other parties in Folketinget (Danish parliament), entered into an agreement on future master's programmes. Ahead of us lies one of the biggest changes to how universities run education in recent times. Overall, the goal of the agreement is that 10 percent of all master's programmes will be shortened from two to one and a quarter year by 2030. An additional 20 percent of master's programmes by 2034 will be business graduates, with students working alongside their studies. And from 2025, Danish universities will admit eight percent fewer students than they do today. These objectives apply to the sector as a whole. The work to transform this into reality at the universities' master's programmes will be initiated during the autumn of 2023. Only when this work has been completed will we know what the graduate reform will mean for AAU and our department specifically.

What can we expect? In general, AAU is probably in a reasonably favourable situation, as the reduction of admissions is based on admissions averages from years when AAU had higher admissions than today. For our study programmes at the Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, it is expected that we will only experience minor changes. This is partly because we already have a short version of our engineering master's programmes in the form of the BEng programmes (diplomingeniøruddannelserne). Here, we will probably be asked to take part in the reform in relation to business graduates, where the students must spread the master's study over e.g. 4 years in parallel with a half-time employment at a company. – Kim Lambertsen Larsen, August 2023.

New Catering Guidelines and improvements

Efforts are underway to enhance catering services at Aalborg University, including more self-service options and a user-friendly app for ordering food.

The University Management has decided to use the cafeterias/Foodhubs and the AAU INNOVATE restaurant, Faculty Club, as the catering provider for meetings and events on AAU's campuses due to financial pressures on existing dining facilities.

From now on remember to:

  1. Procure catering services through AAU's cafeteria provider or AAU INNOVATE's cafe/restaurant for campus events.
  2. Book restaurant visits in Aalborg through AAU's cafe/restaurant provider in AAU INNOVATE as the default choice.

Exceptions can be made, but approval is required for those including choosing alternative restaurants in Aalborg. The university is also reducing contracts with external catering providers and evaluating future restaurant contracts.
