News from Head of Department
The last days of summer are here, and campus is packed with students. This year our building in Aalborg is even more filled, now also with our first-year students. Let us all give the new students the best possible start.
A warm welcome to all the new employees at the Institute! It has been a busy time for our HR unit and we are many new faces. And we can expect to welcome even more in the near future, due to extraordinarily high success with new research grants. Just to name a few of the larger projects, Morten Mattrup Smedskjær has initiated the ERC Consolidator project: ‘New Horizons in Glass Structure and Mechanical Properties’, Per Halkjær and Morten Dueholm starts up Rethink, an NNF Challenge project, and Junjun Tan is at the trailhead with her NNF NERD-project: ‘Recreating Dynamic Behaviours of Life through Systems Chemistry’. Congratulations to all of you who have been granted new projects. I am very happy that all the work that is being put into our research applications is being awarded with increasing success. I am quite sure that we have not exhausted our potential yet.
Speaking of new faces, we have also launched our new website www.bio.aau.dk. I invite you to have a look and give constructive feedback.
Finally, I want to thank you all for your positive contributions to a great institute summer seminar in Mols Bjerge. It was a pleasure to see so many participants, and I am already looking forward next year’s event.
- Michael, Head of Department
New Webpage
The new BIO webpage is now up and running. The new webpage is both more visually appealing, on touch screens and laptops, and articles are easier to read. We started building the webpage in January.
In October the English version of the webpage will be published. The Danish webpage is currently a mix of Danish and English. Right now Line (education – lch@bio.aau.dk) and Niels (research – nks@bio.aau.dk) would like feedback and input on missing or outdated content. Please send them an email, if you notice something.
Everybody is invited for cake to celebrate the new bio.aau.dk Friday 9th of September 10.30 in Aalborg and Thursday morning in Esbjerg.
Summer Seminar in Mols Bjerge
Thank you all for two joyous days with presentations on everything from research collaborations, administrative, and security processes to leadership and strategy. Picking edible plants and fruits in the final days of summer was something to remember! Find slide-shows, photos and other materials here. If you are interested in further info from The Danish Security and Intelligence Service, please contact Marianne (mdb@bio.aau.dk), and you will be provided with more information.
Twitter tricks I didn't know
“Twitter. What's in it for me as a researcher?” This is a question many of you are asking yourself. Many at the department are using the tool on a daily or weekly basis to build academic network and read about the newest findings.
Here are examples of what people are using Twitter for:
- I use it to keep track of what new articles are being published in our field, but just as much to make peers aware of the work we do.
- I got in touch with a colleague from Aarhus University and the dialogue resulted in a joint grant.
- Twitter is great for giving spotlight to new articles. This has meant that articles have received more attention and citations.
- I have used Twitter successfully to draw attention to a PhD course.
- Twitter has been great for advertising open positions in my group. The network effect of the research communities makes Twitter a good place to share positions to the most relevant audiences.
- I like to read about the newest studies and progress in ongoing projects in my field through Twitter. This is not only positive, because it can also create an anxiety that others are a lot more productive than I am.
Here is a public Twitter list of researchers at Department of Chemistry & Bioscience. Everybody can subscribe to the list. Contact Niels (nks@bio.aau.dk) if you want to be on the list, and if you want advice on the use of Twitter.
Edible Insects for a Sustainable Future
In two weeks, we will host the international event EDIBLE INSECTS FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE with ten short lectures and meet-up for researchers and businesses. Read the programme, sign-up and help share info to peers and students.
Inaugural Lecture by Honorary Doctor Sir Gregory Winter
The Department Chemistry and Bioscience, AAU, has the pleasure of inviting you to the inaugural lector of one of the most successful entrepreneurial scientists in Europe. Sir Gregory Winter has won several international prizes and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2018 for his work on recombinant antibodies and phage display. Furthermore, he is a Fellow of the Royal Society, and was knighted in 2004 for services to science. Read more and sign up.
ERC Project Launch: New Horizons in Glass Structure and Mechanical Properties
Every year, the EU awards the 'ERC Consolidator Grant' to a number of excellent researchers who are in the middle of their academic career. The grant is one of the most prestigious in a European context. This year, AAU professor Morten Mattrup Smedskjær is among the recipients of the grant of 2 mio. Euro for the project "NewGLASS: New Horizons in Glass Structure Prediction and Mechanics". Read more and sign up.
Girls Day in Science
Another event we’d like you to share is Girls Day in Science the 5th of October. Cejna, Elsebeth, and Nadieh host the visiting high school girls. – Please help by nudging relevant high school teachers in your network, so we can fill the house.
Anne Flensborg - Celebration
The 30th of June Anne Flensborg had her last day at the department, and many colleagues showed up to give her their best wishes. We are grateful for your many years at Department of Chemistry & Bioscience, your work, and team effort. We wish Anne a good retirement.
DHL Relay Race
The 23rd of August the annual DHL relay race took place in Aalborg, and we were a lot of participating teams in both running and walking. The competition was close, and the atmosphere amazing both during and after the race. Again, this year the university had provided AAU running shirts for the race and catering with grilled sausages and draft beer after the race.
This year's results from the DHL Relay Race:
- Fastest male runner: Mads Albertsen (time 19:57)
- Fastest female runner: Anne Mette Fiil Eskildsen (time 24:28)
- Fastest running team was BIO run 5 with Sebastian Mølvang Dall, Rodrigo Maia Valenca, Mads Albertsen, Morten Eneberg Nielsen, and Mantas Sereika (time 02:03:16)
- Fastest walking teams were BIO walk 4 and 5 with Trine Rolighed Thomsen and Elsa Sverrisdóttir in front, respectively (time 47:27).
New Occupational Health and Safety Representatives (arbejdsmiljørepræsentanter)
Anne Flensborg has retired, and Timo Kirwa wishes to prioritize his time differently. Two employees have announced their candidacy for the task as occupational health and safety representatives (arbejdsmiljørepræsentanter): Michelle Hyldegaard Mortensen (from Chemistry in Aalborg) and Stephen Hald Christiansen (from the Administration). The number of candidates does not exceed the number of vacant spaces; hence Michelle and Stephen are considered elected. They commenced their task on the 1st of July 2022, and their present term of office runs until the 31st of March 2023. We thank Anne and Timo for their service, and we congratulate Michelle and Stephen.
Sickness – Reminder from HR
Staff members must report sick to the e-mail syg@bio.aau.dk and the Head of your Research area cc’d and maybe also your closest colleagues so they know you are absent. This e-mail address should also be used on your child’s first and/or second day of sickness. When you are well again, you must send an e-mail again with the information that you are back.
Next of Kin or Family – News from HR
The department would like to know who your next of kin or family is in case of an emergency. Please go to Statens HR and click on “Settings and Actions”, then “Set preferences”, if you want choose English instead of Danish.
Now you are ready to register your next of kin if you click on “Personal information” and then “Familie og kontakter i nødstilfælde” (it is a mistake that this text is Danish, but the system is not ours to change, unfortunately). Then please add at least one next of kin.
Meeting Schedule for the Department Committees
Being involved in the governing bodies at Aalborg University is one way to increase your influence and support the positive development of the university. We would like to encourage everybody to participate in this process. Please note that the agenda is prepared well in advance of the meetings, which is why any subject for the agenda should be submitted to the committee's representatives no later than one month before the date of the meeting. You will find the representatives of the committees here.
Earlier this year, the department established a Research Committee with representatives from all research areas. This committee’s next meeting is scheduled for Monday 31 October 2022.

AAU's Policy for use of Teaching Material
In the university sector, more attention is now being paid to clarifying the rights to teaching materials prepared by academic staff as part of their employment at universities. The Executive Board has therefore adopted an AAU policy on the use of teaching materials. The purpose of the policy is to clarify the teachers' copyright to teaching materials that they produce as part of their employment at AAU. Read it here.
Guests at the Department
In the administration we are happy to assist you when you are receiving research guests! In order to prepare for the visit, please let us know as soon as possible!
If the guest is a PhD-student, please notify Sara Jellesmark (phd-adm@bio.aau.dk), and for any other guests please contact Louise Bak Søndergaard (Lbak@bio.aau.dk).
It would be of great help, if you send us the following information when planning a visit: Name, ‘guest type’ (e.g. guest researcher, internship, PhD student), nationality, duration of stay, e-mail, contact person at the department, and whether or not you wish for a guest card to access buildings.
Be aware that the guest’s nationality and duration of stay will determine whether for example a work visa is required. Hence it’s important to consult the administration as soon as possible, as the length of the required administrative process will differ.
New Leader of the PhD Programme
After two years as PhD programme director at the department, it is now time for Professor Morten Mattrup Smedskjær to pass on the baton to Professor Kim Lambertsen Larsen, who took over the post on the 1st of September 2022. Big thanks to Morten for an exemplary effort and congratulations to Kim on the new role - we look forward to the collaboration.
