News from the desk of the Head of Department
With this newsletter we conclude the first quarter of the year. From a management point of view, it has on one hand been business as usual and on the other hand quite eventful.
Business as usual
In terms of business as usual I have, besides the normal routines in the cause of the year, invested considerable time in Employer performance and development reviews (MUS) with the tenured scientific staff. To me this is time very well spent and provides me with a very valuable insight into the well-being, job satisfaction, challenges and aspirations of our tenured staff and how I can support them in their work life and with their ambitions. The reviews are still ongoing, and I look forward to two days of review meetings at Campus Esbjerg this week.
Another focus of the managerial work carried out in the past months has been the structuring of the implementation of the department strategy. To ensure as high transparency as possible you can follow the strategy implementation in a document online, as well as provide your own input and ideas. This document provides insights into all proposed initiatives from the Department Council, Daily Management, and the Management Committee. It outlines priorities, responsible persons, and timelines for when each initiative will be addressed. Both this document and the implementation process are dynamic and will be developed continuously.
Find the strategic overview here: BIO Strategy 2025-2029
If you have any comments, suggestions, or questions regarding the strategy, please write an email to Contact@bio.aau.dk.
Prominent visits
On the more eventful side we have had a visit from the dean, where Helene Halkjær Jensen, Michael Ørsted, Kasper Tolborg and Caitlin Singleton were hosts for presenting a “slice of life” at BIO in their respective sections in Aalborg. Similarly, the dean visited our Section at Campus Esbjerg with Jens Laurids Sørensen and Jens Muff as hosts. Speaking about prominent visits, we furthermore had a visit by the Minister for Green Tripartite, which you can read more about below.
EliteForsk 2025
The 25´th of February I had the pleasure to participate in the celebration of the 2025 EliteForsk recipients, where Professor Morten Mattrup Smedskjær was one of the awardees. A formidable achievement for Morten and yet another milestone for the department. Seen in the light that two of our young Professors have been awarded this price in two consecutive years (Prof. Mads Albertsen was awarded the EliteForsk price in 2024) has without a doubt increased the national recognition of our department, the faculty and AAU. You can read more about the price and Mortens research below.
AI:X labs - Hot of the press
The procedure for selecting the new AAU AI:X Labs has just been finalized, and the awardees have been found. AI:EcoNet, with participation of Associate Professor Michael Ørsted from Section of Functional Ecology and Genomics and Assistant Professor Abdulkadir Celikkanat from Department of Computer Science, is one out of 5 AI:X labs that will be initiated in 2025. AI:EcoNet was selected among 44 applications (20 in total from the Faculty of Engineering and Science of which 7 were from BIO). Each AI:X Lab will hire 4 Ph.D.-students with shared supervision between the two lab directors. Congratulation to Michael for securing this important grant.
“Happy birthday”
In the picture: Kim Lambertsen Larsen, Caitlin Singleton, Janneke Wit, Anders Daugberg, Majken Pagter and Laura d´Andrea. Carmelo Morgante is missing in the picture, as he had to leave to attend to a leaking experimental setup.
As a new initiative everyone will be invited for an informal meeting with me, the Head of Department, and other colleagues. To shake it up a bit, employees will be invited according to birthday month (every month in Aalborg and every half year in Esbjerg). I hope you will welcome this new meeting format, where the overall intention is for me to meet employees in an informal setting and vice versa and for colleagues to meet colleagues across sections they did not know they had. The meeting is partially framed as a birthday celebration (with cake and snacks). But as we from the department side are not allowed to celebrate the birthdays of our employees, it is not a birthday celebration.
The first invitations have already been sent and Thursday the 27´th of March we launched the concept in Aalborg with the March birthday people. We spend an enjoyable hour together and a great variety of topics where discussed, including the history of the department, individual career paths, gardening, 5-meter-long squash plants, the original Worcestershire sauce, lutefisk, fermented shark and the subtle difference between Marnite and Vegemite.
Greetings from
KIM
NEWS FROM RESEARCH
How Can Grass Contribute to the Sustainable Food of the Future?
This was the key question when the Minister for Green Tripartite (Grøn Trepart), Jeppe Bruus, visited our department on March 21´st. During his visit, the minister stepped into our labs, where he ground fresh grass and produced a green juice. He was introduced to different fractions of grass protein and even had a taste of the white, flavorless fraction designed for use in food production.
Mads Koustrup Jørgensen shared insights into grass’s promising potential as both animal feed and human food. The minister emphasized the role of grass in reducing soybean imports and enhancing food security, making it a valuable asset in the shift towards more sustainable food production.
Congratulations to Morten on the EliteForsk Award!
We are thrilled to share that our colleague, Professor Morten Mattrup Smedskjær, has been awarded the prestigious EliteForsk Prize 2025 by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science.
Morten’s groundbreaking research on glass materials has gained international recognition, and this award is a testament to his dedication and outstanding contributions to the field. He has played a key role in building a world-class research environment here in Aalborg, and we are proud to have him as part of our department.
Many of us know Morten’s passion for glass – a material that, despite being everywhere in our daily lives, still holds many scientific mysteries. His work is paving the way for exciting innovations, such as self-healing glass and bioactive glass for bone regeneration.
A huge congratulation to Morten – we are proud of you and look forward to following your continued success. Read more about Mortens prize in the article here: https://www.en.update.aau.dk/morten-receives-award-for-research-on-the-glass-of-the-future-n131880

New employee at the administration - Maternity cover
Sarah Heyckendorff Maler Hansen has been hired as a maternity cover for Eva Gøttrup Jensen in project finance, effective February 1. Sarah graduated as a financial controller from UCN in 2024.
Eva's last working day before maternity leave was on March 19, 2025.
Information about maternity leave (Amanda Perschke)
For your information, Amanda Perschke will go on maternity leave on Friday, April 11, 2025, and will not be back in the office until Monday, March 9, 2026. During this period, operations will be busier, as they will be missing one person and our office student Marie Sørensen will be at school for some periods in the autumn.
During the periods when Marie is at school, Heidi Fabricius, who is normally based in Esbjerg, will be more visible in Aalborg and you are therefore also welcome to contact her. However, it would be preferable for you to write to oekonomi@bio.aau.dk.
Info regarding our department cars
Unfortunately, we have found that not everyone is aware of the rules regarding the use of our department cars. Therefore, the procedure for the cars is described here in the newsletter. Before driving in the department cars, it is important that you have filled out a driving log from home, with a signature and stamp, as otherwise you risk a tax assessment from the Danish Tax Authorities if you don’t have this in order. The driving log must be brought with you on the trip and then handed in to the administration after the trip. While driving in the department cars, you must remember to write in the driving log (the blue book), which is always in the cars. This must be done, as we must submit accounts on the cars and need driving data for this. There are instructions in the cars for filling out the driving log. After driving, the cars must be refueled so that they are always ready with a full tank. If the cars become dirty, e.g., due to experimental equipment, etc., you must remember to clean the cars after use.
